PRACTICAL GUIDE

RL environments vs. training datasets

A corpus supplies examples. An environment lets an agent act and receive feedback.

What a dataset provides

A dataset is a collection of records or examples. It may include prompts and answers, preference pairs, images, audio, code, trajectories, or annotations. The key questions are coverage, quality, provenance, and rights.

What an environment provides

An environment supplies a state and action space in which an agent can attempt a task. Useful implementations also include resets, observability, task definitions, and a reward or verifier. Infrastructure costs can matter as much as the initial task set.

Where the two meet

Human demonstrations collected in an environment can become a dataset. A dataset can seed environment states. Ask what is actually delivered and which artifacts remain available if the service ends.

How to compare vendors

For datasets, examine sampling and leakage. For environments, test whether the reward can be gamed and whether successful behavior transfers beyond the supplied tasks. In both cases, reserve an evaluation set that does not overlap with training.
